3 Drawer Negoro Tansu Chest From Japan - Meiji Period Chest of Drawers 27 x 17 x 38This charming original three drawer tansu is finished with negoro lacquer and dates to the Meiji era (1868 1912). Negoro lacquer is uncommon and during the 50's & 60's there was a well known dealer in Japan who refinished chests with negoro lacquer for the Western market. This finish of red lacquering Japanese furniture is known as Negoro and originates in the 12th century AD although this lacquerwork would likely have been carried out during the 50's
