the obverse with a central black enameled medallion bearing a silver gilt crowned cipher of King Ludwig III within a white enameled border in the form of a buckled belt with silver gilt lettering reading “Merenti” (Latin - “Merit”)

Footnote: The medal and a certificate were awarded to very officer and enlisted man that served during the Spanish-American War of Philippine Insurrection in a United States Volunteer organization credited to Colorado

(1943 1945 issue). Constructed of gilded bronze with enamels, consisting of a Maltese Cross with white enameled arms joined through the quadrants by NSDAP style German national eagles clutching wreathed mobile swastikas on white enameled discs, the obverse overlaid across the three and nine oclock arms with crossed swords, the twelve oclock arm topped by a fan suspension
